Hello Everyone,

I am a Registered Nurse and Educator and I have been talking the talk for over 40 years, now it's time to walk the walk. Let me explain...

As a nurse and educator, for the past 40 years, I have been encouraging others to exercise to improve health. Last year my husband and I were inspired by the AHA's start walking program and started logging miles. We have logged over 1000 miles in the past year. We want others to benefit as we have from the start walking program. To bring attention to the benefits of walking I decided to walk the big walk this year. I leave on April 4, the kick off date for the AHA's National Start Walking Program. I will start walking the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail starts at the Mexican border and ends at Manning Park, just over the border into Canada. Total miles 2,663! A trail angel will pick me up from the airport and take me to the trail head. As you can tell, this is not just a walk in the woods. I will carry all my necessities on my back and will blog from the trail. I hope to inspire others to just start walking. Won't you follow me on my journey? You can purchase a wrist band, t-shirt or make a donation on my blog hikeforheart.blogspot.com, or find the link on the American Heart Association's facebook page.

Just start walking, the life you save may be your own.

Happy Trails!

Why Start Walking?

Heart disease is this country's No.1 killer. But by exercising for as little as 30 minutes each day you can reduce your risk. That's what the American Heart Association's start walking movement is all about: Walk more. Eat better. Live a longer, healthier life.

Mark and Mindy embraced this idea a year ago and both set their goals at walking the Pacific Crest Trail. This is no ordinary walk in the woods. The PCT, as it is commonly known as, is 2,663 miles and goes from Campo, just north of the Mexican Border to Canada. The trek takes 5-6 months to complete. Mindy will attempt to hike the trail in 2012 and Mark in 2013. Mindy set her date to leave to coincide with the AHA's National Start Walking Program kick off on April 4th. You can follow her on he r hike by going to her blog at hikeforheart.blogspot.com or from the AHA's face book page.
